The opportunity

If you want to enter the world of digital media and be part of the change and growth of one of Canada’s long-established and respected broadcasters, this is your chance. CBC Digital Audio Products is looking for an Architect to join our growing Digital Audio team as a hands-on leader and mentor.

This is an opportunity to improve, stabilize and even re-design our platform architecture and contribute to the strategy for responsive web, apps and a variety of audio-focused products. You will not be restricted to one realm and will expand your skills to be a master of all trades. You will be the architect behind the design and development of audio streaming functionality to ensure new builds, roll-outs and integrations are done collaboratively and with scalability and sustainability in mind.

This is a chance to develop a high-level framework to integrate audio types into a cohesive whole - live stream; podcast; semi-interactive playlists. You understand how streaming audio (or video) content gets to the audience. In addition, you will also be responsible for introducing and supporting appropriate development standards and best practices for web and mobile development as it relates to the platforms and products you’re working on.

Who you are and where are you now?

You are currently an Architect, Tech Lead or a Developer looking to take the next step. As an audiophile, you appreciate the depth CBC Radio has to offer across Radio One, Music, and Podcasts. You are looking for a position where you can contribute insights as you work with CBC’s Digital Audio team and you are excited to determine how to interconnect the systems. You have an understanding of how to integrate different web and mobile products and the patience to navigate the decision-making and adoption process.

You may have expertise in web or mobile development with a willingness to quickly pick up the other side. You are comfortable building APIs and other backend content. You are comfortable communicating with developers, stakeholders and internal clients, you are passionate about sharing your knowledge and mentoring a team. As our new Architect in Digital Audio you will:

  • Collaborate. You will work side-by-side with Product Managers and delivery teams to understand product roadmaps. You will derive extensible and scalable technical architecture to support those requirements. You will work with other teams (usually dependency-based) inside and outside of the organization to develop strategies for meeting technical objectives
  • Advise. You will help create team-level development standards and advise the product teams on architecture, design, and implementation, and testing best practices. You will work with development teams to define appropriate application frameworks that will be used across applications and infrastructure.
  • Explore. You will conduct research to determine the best (flexible, de-coupled, performant, well-supported) implementation (algorithms, infrastructure, etc.) for a software solution. You will work with product teams to identify and pay-down technical debt and reduce the introduction of new tech-debt.
  • Mentor. You will equip teams with the tools they need to perform at their best and help them grow their ability to develop high quality products. You will work with leaders, managers, and stakeholders to help teams discover and deliver on product needs.

What you bring:

  • The education. A Computer Science, Engineering degree or equivalent is preferred, but we know not everyone gains their skills this way.
  • The passion and innovation. You have an interest in Podcasts and audio/streaming technologies. You enjoy the challenge of determining how our digital assets leverage and depend on our complex technology stack.
  • The desire to learn. You thrive in an experimental, dynamic environment and enjoy the chance to learn new information, approaches, and technologies in a short amount of time.
  • The empathy and the vision. You understand the customer’s business issues/needs and how to design a solution that completely and accurately allows your customer to achieve their goals.
  • The communication skills. You know how to help your technical and business audience. You can effectively listen and are able to present with the right level of detail.
  • The leadership skills. You believe in listening to and incorporating diverse perspectives, sharing what you’ve learned and encouraging team members to teach others. You have a natural ability to lead, champion and mentor developers in a collaborative environment.
  • The Agile experience. You believe in the Agile methodology but you are flexible and open to the real world twists and turns. You have an understanding of how to work with other delivery methods.
  • The hands-on expertise. You have proven success in software development, working your way up over the last 3 to 5 years developing large complex web and/or mobile applications. You have in-depth proficiency and knowledge in the following areas:
    • API development, streaming content and metadata, Cloud Services (AWS, Azure, etc)
    • Database design and development, distributed data sources, data migration.
    • Modern DevOps practices; CI/CD, testing and automation, robust build and deployment pipelines.
    • Front-end web development and components are an asset.
    • Native mobile development (Swift, Java, Kotlin) on Android or iOS are an asset.
