Senior Director, CBC Listen, Digital Strategy

The Digital Strategy Group is a department connected to every facet of the organization as a strategic partner and catalyst supporting our all-around transformation to a digital-first organization. We are thought-leaders, evolutionary planners, and executors, facilitating the alignment of operational models, digital-focused strategies, and objectives across all functions in the organization. We work with Digital Products; Content Creation Units; Radio; News; Local; and virtually anyone who interacts with audio content including Marketing; Media Technology and Sales. CBC Listen is the latest digital service being launched by CBC. It combines Live radio, on demand audio, podcasts and music Playlists in a seamless free audience experience that reflects every aspect of Canadian life.

The opportunity

We are seeking an audiophile and strategic people leader to join as a vital member of the CBC Digital Leadership Team. This is a chance to take ownership for implementing a strategy aimed at growing digital audio audiences. With a focus on reach, engagement and retention as well as meeting or exceeding revenue objectives, the new Senior Director, CBC Listen will ensure CBC/Radio-Canada is recognized as an industry leading service in Canada.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Digital Strategy, we have a newly created position for a Senior Director, CBC Listen. The new Senior Director, CBC Listen will partner with the Executive Director of Radio and Audio and other key internal stakeholders to accelerate the growth of CBC's new unified digital audio service ensuring the offer continues to align with the values and content strategy of Radio and Audio.

Building. Your mandate as Senior Director, CBC Listen will focus on developing and implementing CBC's digital audio strategy and business operations and ensuring it aligns across Corporate, Digital, Radio and Audio content priorities and core objectives. You will have ownership over:

  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring the CBC's digital audio strategy to ensure the delivery of growth and other targets.
  • Building, evolving, and maintaining an annual business plan and roadmap.
  • Optimizing CBC Listen audience funnels to drive acquisition, engagement, and retention in the service
  • Assessing, making recommendations, and aligning digital audio content strategies.
  • Identifying and implementing tools to enable the creation, distribution, measurement, and monetization of digital audio content.
  • Supporting and fostering a virtual team across operating units, including content, product, business operations, marketing, and revenue.
  • Monitoring standards and practices across all platforms containing audio content.
  • Ensuring alignment with Radio-Canada Digital Strategy Business Unit.

What you bring as our new Senior Director, CBC Listen, Digital Strategy:

  • The education and experience. You have a post-secondary degree in a related field. Bilingualism in French and English is an asset. You have an advanced understanding of the digital environment specific to the media industry and extensive experience with:
    • Growing digital audiences.
    • Subscription business models including the management of customer acquisition, retention and lifetime value
    • Digital products, services, and community development.
  • The passion. You have a passion for people and building teams. You understand digital media and technology. Ideally, you have an appreciation for radio and audio content and systems.
  • The relationship building. You can motivate, inspire, and grow a team and its members. You can nurture strong two-way relationships across product teams, peers, and executives. You have a deep understanding of how to inspire and guide the work of digital teams. You are an advocate for the Agile methodology.
  • The corporate savvy. You can navigate and push the boundaries of a national organization. You understand how to work within the processes and use the significant budget as well as existing resources, tools, and personnel to your advantage. You can adapt your approach to work through the layers of corporate culture effectively.
  • The strength in leadership. You are a leader in an agile organization; you have a history of coaching, mentoring, and empowering people and teams. You can foster and inspire a culture of collaboration; embracing the perspectives of others. You know how to engage stakeholders and gain buy-in for your vision.
  • The insights and the strategy. You are a strategic thinker with the patience to consider all options before jumping into a decision. You are motivated by building robust, reliable processes and solutions that support and empower your team. 
  • The intellectual curiosity. You are continuously researching, learning, and innovating; you can influence the teams around you to adapt quickly and to embrace the new while accepting the ambiguous.
