Director, Technical Strategy

CBC Digital Products is the country’s biggest digital startup, taking on the challenges of innovating how media is made, sent and received. We are also part of Canada’s oldest and truest broadcasting company. We are trying new things. We are growing. As an entity of our own. As a voice for our country. As a team.

Digital is a part of our present and all of our future. CBC’s strategy is focused on becoming a digital-first organization that provides a digital platform for storytellers. Our mission is to engage our audience with stories they care about.

The opportunity

CBC/Radio-Canada is one of Canada’s most popular digital media properties and Canada’s most influential media brand. Right now, we are adding a Director, Technology Strategy to the team. This is an opportunity to step up from and guide the product management team and the technical strategy for developing the digital media tools and systems that help us build on our success. You will seek to improve our processes and our products while working with highly collaborative people. At CBC we’re curious and driven to create. We stand up for what matters. We rise and fall together. We have a passion for our purpose.

Who you are

A creative, proactive and strategic leader of ideas, technology, processes and people, you are looking to move up to Director at an organization with a purpose, one where you can make a difference without sacrificing your work-life balance. With both the software development knowledge and the team leadership abilities, you bring first-hand knowledge of what a team needs to succeed. You are a catalyst for planning and a conduit for information. You want to empower teams to make good decisions. You know how to build alignment, and elevate engagement with your technology vision across a team and an organization. You want to work with functional leads within a growing cross-functional digital team to sustain a culture of collaboration, learning and improvement.

What’s in it for you?

Cutting edge tech. CBC has more than 25 digital sites, all of which are mandated to reach Canadians online everywhere and every way, with a high emphasis on mobile devices. To achieve that goal, we’ve forged strong relationships with Google, Apple, Amazon and others to stay ahead of the curve. You will lead the adoption of agile engineering practices that enable a pace of development and releasing required to quickly improve the digital audience experience that CBC provides. You’ll know you’re successful when your team is aligned with the organization in working towards a shared vision, when they know that what they’re doing is essential, and when CBC is continuously improving.

Belonging. CBC/Radio-Canada is a Canadian institution. By joining our dynamic Digital Products department, you will be exposed to the best of all worlds. Corporate. Public. Startup. You will help execute and evolve a three-year vision that spans CBC’s digital products and supports CBC’s strategic plan. You will nurture a culture of process improvement and encourage innovations in how we work to drive organizational change.

Career growth. This is a level of exposure that few other roles provide. We need to implement a highly scalable technical strategy for architecture that can support the most impressive numbers by a corporation on this side of the border. That’s tens of thousands of concurrent users at peak time on a typical news day and several hundred thousand simultaneously during the Olympics, the Federal election, and world-changing events like The Tragically Hip’s final live performance.

What you will do

In close collaboration with leaders and subject matter experts across CBC, you will develop a shared vision for the technology we need to give Canadians the best possible audience experience. You will be a leader in an Agile organization; you will facilitate great outcomes, you will enable the wisdom in our developers and architects, and you will create the right context for our teams to do their best work.

In this role, you will focus on fostering a culture of continuous learning; working with stakeholders to create a roadmap that aligns with our vision and is reflected in the priorities of a fiscal plan; enabling optimization of tools through architectural leadership.

You will position the CBC as an innovative public media company that can effectively compete with the best technology companies for audiences and talent. With a built-in, dedicated audience, of millions of Canadians seeking information and entertainment on a National level, your work will impact an entire country from coast-to-coast.
