Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

Behind the scenes, but ahead of the curve: help us develop the next-generation public broadcaster.

A place with purpose. CBC/Radio-Canada has always been a highly-regarded pioneer of media technology. Not just in Canada, but around the world. Today, we’re transforming ourselves from a conventional radio and television broadcaster into a modern digital media company. Technology is the driving force and we are the team making it happen.

We spend our days solving complex problems on a large scale. Media over IP is cutting edge and as such, very complex and new to the broadcasting environment. You will play a leading role in its development at CBC/Radio-Canada for the future.

Your role

As our new Sr. Systems Administrator (Media Over IP), you will provide senior technical support for the real-time,  media over IP environment, which includes but is not limited to, Precision Time Protocol (PTP), Arista networks, Lawo VSM, Embryonix, Arista MCS, SMPTE ST 2110 and AES67, within Infrastructure and Support.

What's in it for you?

Challenges and balance. We spend our days solving problems on an unbelievable scale. Media over IP is highly nuanced and complicated; updating, installing, and supporting technologies that are organization-wide and that impact broadcasting content is a time-sensitive, complex technical feat. Every day you will expand your hands-on knowledge, your problem-solving skills and your ability to translate technical issues as you work closely with internal clients across CBC/Radio-Canada facing issues with content creation, backend systems, studios and control rooms. You will make a tangible impact on how we deliver content to our audience of millions of Canadians.

Be part of a diverse and inclusive team and organization. We believe in celebrating human differences and know that there is no other path to becoming the best public broadcaster for all Canadians. There's still more work to be done, and we are deeply committed to putting all of our corporate, individual, and collective efforts into doing the work. You will be part of our growth and have opportunities to participate in our diversity and inclusion initiatives, including but not limited to Emerging Leadership Training and Unconscious Bias training. This is a genuine opportunity to join a collaborative team and be mentored, expanding your career opportunities with the chance to grow into a Senior Technician and beyond.

Cutting-edge technology. Our new home in Montréal is a cutting-edge I.P.-based production, modelled in a fashion similar to an IT data centre, with thousands of media devices automated and managed through the network. As the only major media company in Canada with complete IP Infrastructure, we are thought leaders and experts in this area. We have also partnered with Cisco and Arista for custom network platforms built on their latest technology. This is a chance to rapidly gain exposure to CBC/Radio-Canada's technologies, tools, and projects, across multiple initiatives, not just the ones in your assigned portfolio. You will develop hands-on experience with rare yet in-demand technologies.

As our new Sr. Systems Administrator (media over-IP) you will:

  • Provide senior technical support for the media real-time environment.
  • Troubleshoot moderate to very complex problems encountered in the media real-time environment, such as on-air service interruptions. Conduct detailed problem analysis, liaise with the vendor as required, collaborate with other units (IT,Engineering, Production etc.), and implement solutions to restore services and meet the needs of clients.
  • Analyse problems with existing tools (wireshark, EBU LIST, PRISM).
  • Participate in rotational on-call schedule to provide 24/7 support for critical and on-air broadcast systems.
  • Document problems and detailed solutions in appropriate systems to retain corporate memory and to aid in resolving future problems of a similar nature.
  • Develop operational procedures and standards.
  • Plan, coordinate and implement system configurations. Configure and design systems to fulfill requirements for uninterrupted 24 hours per day/7 days per week operations.
  • Configure systems for unattended operation, remote diagnostics and recovery for operational and cost efficiencies.
  • Automate deployment, related scripting and changes through tools like Ansible, Git, Puppet etc.;
  • Execute lab tests prior to changes and updates.
  • Provide leadership, planning and coordination of projects to effectively manage the upgrading and maintenance of supported systems, following formal methodologies and change management processes and monitoring to fulfill the operational mandates and minimize the negative impact on users.
  • Provide technical direction for projects to other units (IT, Broadcast Engineering, Architecture etc) ensuring that all areas impacted are involved in the process.
  • Plan and coordinate testing of changes in a test environment before implementation. Schedule and oversee implementation to minimize the negative impact on clients. Ensure follow up to resolve any issues.
