Work at CBC/Radio-Canada

Behind the scenes, but ahead of the curve: help us develop the next-generation public broadcaster.

Created in 2015 to align, lighten and modernize infrastructure, the Technology and Infrastructure team is the backbone and the future forward arm of CBC/Radio-Canada. We are the people that make stuff work. We make connections; between media content, systems, people and places. We are the space in between.

A place with purpose. CBC/Radio-Canada has always been a highly-regarded pioneer of media technology. Not just in Canada, but around the world. Today, we’re transforming ourselves from a conventional radio and television broadcaster into a modern digital media company. Technology is the driving force and we are the team making it happen.

Your role

The HR Business Consulting team is looking for its newest Bilingual HR Business Partner to join the Technology & Infrastructure (T&I) HR Team, supporting CBC/Radio-Canada leaders across the country.

As a passionate HR Business Partner, you will partner with the management teams to build and to ensure the success of their people strategies. You will be the first point of contact and support for Human Resources and Labour Relations consulting while spearheading initiatives with an eye for aligning HR management practices with specific client needs.

With your superior communication skills, in both English and French, you thrive in being proactive in providing creative solutions and showing sound judgment in your advisory role, working on organizational development and change management initiatives.

You will bring to the HR Business Partners team a strong expertise and will help the HR Director to foster a collaborative working environment for all HR Business Partners. You will also work actively on global files in the team’s portfolio collaborating with all management levels of Technology and Infrastructure, including Executives.

What's in it for you?

Challenges and rewards. This is an opportunity to expand your exposure to a matrixed union environment that includes nontraditional members across technology. Navigating the T&I environment, you will deepen your understanding of the teams your managers support, including production solutions services, transmission, maintenance, telecommunications, and IT support on the English side of the business (Toronto/ Western Canada). You will draw on support from the multiple centres of excellence in the business and work in close collaboration with your peers in HR. You will step up to address challenges such as employee engagement, workplace culture, diversity and inclusion, coaching and guiding new technical people leaders to optimize their effectiveness.

Be part of a diverse and inclusive team and organization. We believe in celebrating human differences and know that there is no other path to becoming the best public broadcaster for all Canadians. There's still more work to be done, and we are deeply committed to putting all of our corporate, individual, and collective efforts into doing the work. You will be part of our growth and have opportunities to participate in our diversity and inclusion initiatives, including but not limited to Emerging Leadership Training and Unconscious Bias training. You will work with managers eager and committed to creating a more inclusive, civil, and respectful working environment. Led by a manager dedicated to hearing your unique perspective, you will help shape the work we do and how we do it.

Career growth. As part of the People & Culture team, you provide essential support to CBC T&I.  We are the only major media company in Canada with complete I.P. Infrastructure, you will work in partnership with thought leaders and experts in this area, gaining insights into how technical engineering teams work together to bring information and education to Canadians across multiple platforms. You will have the opportunity to be strategic, take on new initiatives, and gain insights to grow your career.

As our new HR Business Partner, you will:

  • Advise and support. You will coach and guide senior managers to ensure the professional development of their team, consulting on performance management, labor relations, organizational development, training, compensation, and staffing.
  • Build relationships. You will create and nurture trusting and influential partnerships with senior managers, and your peers. You will ensure productive union-management relations by maintaining effective working relationships with union representatives locally.
  • Support and execute plans. You will help implement HR, people, and culture initiatives that align with the organizational strategic plans. You will help build out technical career pathing for senior team members who don't want to follow a management path. You will contribute to the framework and guidelines for a flexible teleworking policy incorporating best practices for technology and media/broadcasting teams.
  • Collaborate. You will be the bridge between your managers and corporate initiatives such as talent review and succession planning. You will apply your insights and expertise to partner with them and contribute to these initiatives, navigating collective agreements and policies that need interpretation for a technical engineering environment.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • The experience. You have a university degree and completion of a recognized Human Resources Management Program. You have experience as an HR generalist, business partner, and consultant working in a matrixed environment, both virtual and onsite. You have a comprehensive understanding of Human Resources functions with expertise in employee relations and program development.
  • The knowledge. You have an in-depth understanding of collective agreements and working in a unionized environment; Canadian and Provincial Employment Standards and legislation including OHSA and AODA.
  • The accountability. You have a sincere passion for your profession, and building human-to-human relationships to grow an understanding of the needs of your people and the organization. You thrive in a coaching role, working with managers and leaders to facilitate an exemplary work environment for their teams. You draw on insights, experience, and best practices to make and stand behind your recommendations. You believe in cultivating a mutually supportive, diverse, and inclusive work environment. You can seamlessly adapt to changes in priorities, the business, or the industry. You have the confidence to take new ideas forward and productively challenge the status quo.
  • The collaboration. You take ownership of your work and its impact on the company's ability to be successful. You have a genuine appreciation for hearing diverse perspectives, and you prioritize inclusivity in all actions, words, and policies. You have a collaborative spirit and can build productive relationships across the organization, respecting the structure in place for projects and ownership.
  • The communication skills. You speak, write, and read English and French fluently. Or, you have English language skills and you are willing and interested in improving your French language communication skills. You have outstanding professional written, verbal, and presentation skills. You ask intelligent questions to obtain information, identify root causes, and determine a solution. You have exceptional relationship management, conflict management, and negotiation abilities.
