The opportunity

If you want to enter the world of digital media and be part of the change and growth of one of Canada’s long established and respected broadcasters this is your chance. CBC Digital Operations is looking for a Data Developer to join our growing team.

Our new Data Developer position will be responsible for creating personalized and engaging experiences for Canadians through all of CBC’s digital products. They will also be helping content creators make informed decisions about the the content they produce for our platforms. While strong core Python and Java skills are ideal for this role, we welcome people who feel they can contribute.

This is an opportunity for a developer who is confident in their capabilities, eager to innovate and open to learning. New project work that you may be involved with includes:

  • Iterating our data streaming infrastructure;
  • Experimenting with various algorithms to help understand our audience and how they consume and access web content;
  • Using machine learning to create personalized experiences uniquely customized for each user.

How you will make a difference on a daily basis:

  • Collaborate with fellow team members and Architects to ensure the highest quality product is developed and best practices are followed
  • Help the team to provide task breakdown and effort estimates to assist planning and implementation

What you bring:

  • The education. A Computer Science, Engineering degree or equivalent is preferred, but we know not everyone gains their programming skills this way.
  • The passion. You have a passion for machine intelligence and you are enthusiastic about the opportunity to use it to provide better engaging experiences to our audience.
  • The desire to learn. You have the ability to quickly learn new technologies and respond to change by learning and adapting.
  • The communication skills. You know how to listen and relay empathy and understanding for diverse perspectives. You are able to verbalize complex abstract concepts.
  • The confidence and the humility. Your powers of observation help you understand your audience and communicate with the right level of detail. You are open to the ideas of others.
  • The creativity and adaptability. You can adapt quickly, innovate solutions and embrace the new while accepting the ambiguous.
  • The Agile experience. We value collaboration, learning and improvement in everything we do, and believe that having an Agile mindset when approaching work is key in supporting those values.
  • The hands-on expertise. You have experience working with large data sets and at least one year experience building machine learning models. You also like  and experimenting with new technologies. Your strengths are the eagerness to experiment and desire to contribute to bleeding edge technology development. You are able to demonstrate projects to which you have contributed in such way.
  • The Nice-to-haves: You have knowledge or interest in Big Data technologies, NoSQL, Python, Java, Machine Learning, Google Cloud Platform, AWS, ETL, Statistics, or Academic Research.
