Senior Systems Administrator

Media Technology and Infrastructure Services (MTIS) is spearheading the consolidation and modernization of CBC/Radio-Canada’s technology and infrastructure in support of our transformation into a modern public media company. There are very few places where you can work at this scale. Our infrastructure supports the millions of Canadians who visit the CBC’s digital properties every month. During major events, like the Olympics, a federal election or a major news event, our audience grows exponentially. We want a Senior Systems Administrator who is excited to help our teams develop infrastructure that allows millions of Canadians to have the experience they come to expect from us.

Our new Senior Systems Administrator will be responsible for introducing and advocating tools, systems, workflows and processes across both MTIS and CBC Digital Operations. While strong core development, systems and infrastructure skills are ideal for this role, we welcome people who feel they can contribute in non-traditional ways.

How you will make a difference on a daily basis, you will:

  • Implement. You will implement and perform network and instance monitoring. You will follow appropriate remediation tasks in the case of an identified fault.
  • Maximize performance. You will analyze and optimize system configurations and network structures to maximize performance.
  • Support. You will troubleshoot internal software development and operations related issues and provide technical support.
  • Maintain. You will ensure the smooth and efficient running of the infrastructure responsible for the operation and development of our audience and internal facing digital assets.
  • Be on-call. You will participate in occasional on-call support for after-hours support coverage.
  • Advocate.Your role will include educating teams and individuals on the benefits and successes of following certain processes and using specific tools. You will strive for - and encourage- collaboration and consistency across teams.
  • Contribute. You will contribute systems expertise to the project planning process including estimating and process improvements.
  • Perfect. You will strive at all times to do work using best practices – through experience or experimentation.

What you bring:

  • The education. A Computer Science, Engineering degree or equivalent is preferred, but we know not everyone gains their programming skills this way.
  • The hands-on expertise. You have a balanced blend of experience in system administration, release deployment and development. You can empathize with a developer’s needs and tools. You can work with product teams to understand their needs and build infrastructure. You are a Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) or you have the equivalent experience. You understand the modern aspects of cloud technology -  modelling, deployment, storage, optimization and management - in Google and Azure.
  • The technical skills. You have experience with:
    • Java, PHP, Javascript, PostgresSQL
    • Atlassian tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Crowd, Bitbucket, Bamboo, Fisheye
    • VMWare Virtualization and cloud hosting services
    • Shell scripting skills (intermediate)
  • The bonus technical skills. You have experience with:
    • Hosted CMS and microCMS systems
    • Working in a broadcast media environment
    • With Content Delivery Networks such as Akamai
